We are pleased to announce that Dr. Vladimir Arčabić (University of Zagreb, Croatia) will workshop his working paper at the ERG Workshop series on April 15, 2022, at 1pm-2pm (Central). Dr. Vladimir Arčabić (e-mail: varcabic@efzg.hr) is the assistant professor at the University of Zagreb, Faculty of Economics and Business, Croatia. His research interests are in the field of macroeconomics, business cycle, applied econometrics, time series, and macroeconomic modeling. He graduated from the University of Zagreb in 2015, and in 2016 he was a visiting scholar at the University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa, USA.

Topic: International Comovements of Public Debt

Abstract: This paper studies the comovements of public debt using a Bayesian dynamic factor model. We find that a distinct global factor accounts for 30 percent of the variation in public debt across our sample of 115 countries from 1980 to 2015. Regional factors also play a significant role for Eurozone, Latin America, and Sub-Saharan Africa. Moreover, the exposure to global comovements is positively correlated with the share of external public debt.
